各位嘉宾，
老师们，同学们，

很高兴出席北京大学120周年校庆海外庆典暨北京大学汇丰商学院英国校区启动仪式。首先，我谨对北京大学120周年校庆和北京大学汇丰商学院英国校区正式启动表示热烈祝贺！
It is a real delight to join you at the 120th Anniversary Overseas Celebrations of the Peking University and the Inauguration of Peking University HSBC Business School (PHBS) UK Campus. First of all, I would like to extend my warm congratulations!
北京大学是中国近代建立的第一所综合性大学。120年前，一批中国爱国志士喊出了兴学图强的口号，北京大学应运而生。在一个多世纪的进程中，北京大学始终走在时代前列。特别是改革开放40年来，北京大学锐意进取，砥砺前行，持续提升学术、教育和研究水平，逐步发展成为一所享誉中外、世界一流的高等学府，为发展中国教育事业和实现中华民族伟大复兴中国梦做出了重要贡献。
Peking University is the first comprehensive university in modern Chinese history. It was founded 120 years ago amid a patriotic movement to build a strong nation through improving education. Since then, in its history of over a century, Peking University has been at the forefront of the times. The past 40 years since China began reform and opening up has been especially important for Peking University as it continued to build up its academic, education and research capabilities. Strenuous and persistent efforts have resulted in what is now a world-class university that has made important contribution to the undertaking of education in China and the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation.
按照中国纪年方法，120年就是两个甲子，意味着两个“轮回”。站在新“轮回”的起点上，我们不仅要庆祝北京大学历史上的辉煌，更要展望未来的前进方向。从这个意义上讲，北京大学汇丰商学院英国校区正式启动，是送给北京大学120周年庆典一份厚重的贺礼。我认为，这其中有三个重要意义：
In the Chinese calendar, 60 years form a cycle. Now, after two cycles, Peking University has come to a new starting point. Now is a good time for celebration of achievements. More importantly it is a moment to look ahead. The inauguration of the PHBS UK Campus is a visionary gift for the 120th anniversary of Peking University. I believe this event has three-fold significance:
首先，这是传播中国精神的有益尝试。大学是人类智慧产生、汇集、传播、辐射的重要场所，它不仅是学术机构，更是民族精神的象征。一流大学对于塑造民族精神内核和文化品格至关重要。优秀的民族必有世界一流的大学，强大的国家必有代表先进生产力的高等学府。北京大学是新文化运动的中心和五四运动的策源地，是最早在中国传播马克思主义和科学、民主思想的阵地，北大的光辉历史生动地诠释了中国人民自强不息、开拓进取的民族精神。北京大学汇丰商学院英国校区的建立，不仅将使北大爱国、进步、民主、科学的光荣传统在海外发扬光大，更是推动中国民族精神不断走向世界的一次重要尝试。
First, this is a valuable effort to share the Chinese spirit with the world. A university is where human wisdom is crystallized, accumulated, shared and disseminated. A good university is not a mere academic institution. It is a symbol of the national spirit. A good university is of great importance to building the spiritual core and cultural identity of a nation. A great nation always boasts world-class universities; a strong country is never without a higher learning institution that represents advanced productive forces. Peking University is such a university that China is proud of. It was the center of the New Culture Movement. It was the cradle of the May Fourth Movement. And it provided the earliest breeding ground for the dissemination of Marxism and the ideas of science and democracy in China. The glorious history of Peking University is a vivid depiction of the persevering and pioneering spirit of the Chinese people. Today, with the opening of the PHBS UK Campus, Peking University is ready to share not only its traditions of patriotism, progress, democracy and science but also the national spirit of China.
第二，这是讲好中国故事的崭新舞台。讲好中国故事，就是要将中国的历史、文化、语言以及社会制度、发展理念、改革探索、开放实践让外国朋友听得懂、听得进、听而信。中国改革开放已经40年，对外开放的大门越开越大，但不少外国民众对中国的印象还停留在功夫、美食、舞狮等简单化和符号化的阶段，讲好中国故事依然任重道远。北京大学汇丰商学院英国校区主要面向英国和欧洲大陆招生，开设了很多具有中国元素的课程，不仅教授中国悠久灿烂的历史、文化，也讲解当代中国的经济发展、体制改革、企业管理、金融理论等。学生们的学习一年在牛津，一年在深圳，还将参观走访中国最具活力的创新企业、金融机构等。这些课程将让学生们有机会深度了解中国的传统底蕴，全面体验中国的现代气息，既有“国际范儿”，又有“中国味儿”。
Second, this is a brand new platform to tell the China story. To tell the China story is to help the world understand and appreciate China’s history, culture, language as well as its social system, development concepts, reform and opening-up efforts. Four decades of reform and opening up have opened China’s door much wider to the world. China today has many more to offer than merely kungfu, Chinese food and lion dance, yet the simplified and stereotyped image of China lingers. There is still a great deal more we should do to tell the China story. The PHBS UK Campus is an excellent platform for this. It opens to students from Britain and the European Continent. The courses cover various aspects of China, from history and culture of this ancient civilization to the economic development, institutional reform, business management and financial theories of modern China. Students will spend a year in Oxford and another in Shenzhen. They will have the opportunities to visit the most dynamic creative industry and financial institutions in China. These courses will give the students an all-round and deep understanding of both China’s profound heritage and its contemporary progress. They will merge a global vision with the “Chinese style”.
第三，这是深化中英教育合作的重要机遇。今年是中国改革开放40周年。40年来，中英教育交流与合作蓬勃发展。目前，英国有120多所大学与300多所中国大学建立了校际合作关系。中国在英国留学人员数量超过17万，约9000名英国学生赴华学习。全英共建有29所孔子学院和156所孔子课堂。不论是在英中国学生人数，还是孔子学院和课堂数量，均稳居欧洲第一。今年初，梅首相成功访华，两国领导人再次确认中英关系“黄金时代”大方向。教育合作也是此访一大亮点，双方签署的教育协议总价值超过5.5亿英镑，将在英国创造800个就业岗位。中英关系“黄金时代”必将给两国教育合作带来更多“黄金机遇”。
Third, this is an important opportunity to build closer educational partnership between China and the UK. This year marks the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening up. It is a good time to take stock of the thriving exchanges and cooperation between China and the UK in the field of education over the past 40 years. More than 120 British universities have established intercollegiate exchanges with over 300 Chinese universities. More than 170 thousand Chinese students are studying here in Britain and about 9,000 British students are in China. Across the UK, there are 29 Confucius Institutes and 156 Confucius Classrooms. In terms of the number of Chinese students, Confucius Institutes and Confucius Classrooms, Britain ranks No.1 among all European countries. At the beginning of this year, Prime Minister May paid a successful visit to China. During the visit, the leaders of our two countries reaffirmed their commitment to the China-UK “Golden Era”. One of the highlights of this visit was education. The two sides signed agreements on education cooperation worth over £550 million. They are expected to create 800 jobs in Britain. As the China-UK “Golden Era” continues to develop, there will be more “golden opportunities” for building closer China-UK partnership in education.
北京大学历来是中英教育合作的推动者和引领者。140多年前，中国第一批海军留学生负笈英伦，其中有位名叫严复的留学生日后成为北京大学第一任校长。2008年，北京大学与汇丰银行携手创办北京大学汇丰商学院，更是将北大深厚的学术传统和文化底蕴与汇丰银行的商业智慧和国际视野融合在一起。此次北京大学汇丰商学院英国校区的启动，又开创了中英和中外教育交流诸多“第一”：中国高等教育第一次走进发达国家；中国大学第一次在海外独立建设、自主管理实体办学机构。这在中外教育交流史上具有重要里程碑意义，必将对中英教育合作产生深远影响。
Peking University has been a facilitator and leader in China-UK cooperation on education. More than 140 years ago, China sent its first group of students to study naval expertise in the UK. Among them was Yan Fu, who later became the first President of Peking University. In 2008, Peking University and HSBC jointly established the PHBS. This School brought together the academic traditions and culture of Peking University and the business wisdom and global vision of HSBC. Today, the inauguration of the PHBS UK Campus marked many “firsts” in the education exchanges between China and the world, and between China and the UK. This is the first Chinese “export” of higher education to a developed country. This is the first independently built and run Chinese university campus overseas. This is surely an important milestone in the history of China’s education exchanges with the rest of the world. It will have far-reaching impact on the education cooperation between China and the UK.
英国朋友告诉我，登上英国校区的塔楼，可以眺望到远处的牛津大学。牛津大学之于英国，恰如北京大学之于中国，两所大学都是各自高等教育的先驱，都是两个优秀民族的精神家园。我期待两个学校今后更加紧密地合作，共同为中英教育交流做出更多贡献。
My British friends told me that on top of the tower in the PHBS UK Campus, you could see the University of Oxford. The University of Oxford is to Britain what Peking University is to China. Both are pioneers in the higher education. Both are the spiritual home of their outstanding nations respectively. I look forward to closer partnership between the two universities. I believe such cooperation will boost education exchanges between China and the UK.
此时此刻，我想起中国的一句古诗，“欲穷千里目，更上一层楼”。北京大学在迈向世界顶级高校的征程中需要更上一层楼，中英教育合作要结出更多“黄金成果”也需要更上一层楼，中英关系要成为新型国际关系的典范更需要更上一层楼。我衷心希望，北京大学不断攀登，续写辉煌；希望两国教育界人士登高望远，开拓创新，为两国人文交流添砖加瓦，为中英关系“黄金时代”增光添彩，为建设更加美好的世界贡献力量！
A line of Chinese ancient poem reads “To enjoy grander sights, you need to scale new heights.” Peking University needs to scale new heights to become a top university in the world. China-UK education cooperation needs to scale new heights to deliver more “golden fruits”. China and the UK need to scale new heights in forging an exemplary new type of state-to-state relationship. It is my sincere hope that Peking University will keep achieving glorious new accomplishments. It is also my hope that the education sectors of China and the UK will keep exploring new territories of cooperation. I hope you will work together to enhance cultural and people-to-people exchanges between our two countries, to promote the China-UK “Golden Era”, and to build a more beautiful world.
