Speech by Consul-General Zhao Jian at the Commemoration of 200 Years of Chinese Immigration to Australia

尊敬的维州上议长布鲁斯·阿特金森先生，
尊敬的维州反对党领袖代表、影阁工业部长罗伯特·克拉克先生，尊敬的维州影阁多元文化部长英加·普利什女士，
维省华人社团联合会主席苏俊希女士，
各位侨领，各位侨胞，女士们，先生们，朋友们：

很高兴出席今天这个纪念华人抵达澳大利亚200周年的隆重仪式。我谨代表中国驻墨尔本总领馆向本次活动的组织者、参与者和支持者表示衷心感谢，向所有关心支持华人社区的朋友们表示诚挚敬意！
It is a pleasure for me to attend this grand ceremony commemorating 200 years of Chinese immigration to Australia. Let me first thank the organizers and those who have contributed to and supported today’s event. My thanks also go to all the friends who have cared about and supported the Chinese community.
200年来，华人移民在澳大利亚这片土地上辛勤劳动，艰苦创业，为自己和子孙后代开创了一片新天地，建设了一个充满希望与活力的华人社区。
Over the past 200 years, the Chinese immigrants, working diligently and in an enterprising spirit, have built new homes for themselves and their offspring and formed a promising and dynamic Chinese community in Australia.
200年来，华人移民为澳大利亚这片土地的发展和繁荣做出了历史性贡献，也成为澳大利亚多元文化社会的重要组成部分。
In this process, they have become an integral part of multicultural Australia, making historical contributions to the development and prosperity of this country.
200年前华人移民的到来开启了近代中澳两国人民交往史。1972年中澳建交，两国关系揭开了新篇章。今天，两国已经建立起全面战略伙伴关系，双边经贸往来和人文交流日益密切，中国成为澳大利亚最大的贸易伙伴。这体现了两国关系的深厚基础。
The arrival of Chinese immigrants 200 years ago kicked off the people-to-people exchanges between China and Australia in modern times. A new chapter was opened in our relations when we established diplomatic relations in 1972, which have grown to be what is now the comprehensive strategic partnership. China is now Australia’s largest trading partner, and our business links and cultural and people-to-people exchanges are growing with each passing day. All this has demonstrated the solid basis of our relationship.
维多利亚州在中澳关系发展中一直发挥着重要引领作用。近年来，安德鲁斯州长每年访华一次，维州政府新版《中国战略》实施取得重要进展。正如安德鲁斯州长多次强调的那样，维州对华关系不仅仅是商业贸易合作，而是致力于在互尊互信基础上增进了解、深化友谊，构建长期伙伴关系。我们相信，在这一有远见的战略指导下，维州对华交流合作一定会不断迈上新台阶。
Among all the states in Australia, Victoria has played a leading role in growing relations with China. Premier Andrews has visited China once a year in recent years, and the implementation of the new China Strategy has made good progress. As Premier Andrews has stressed on many occasions, Victoria is not only developing business and trade relations with China, but also committed to deepening mutual understanding and friendship and forging a long-term partnership with China on the basis of mutual trust. We believe that under the guidance of this visionary strategy, Victoria’s exchanges and cooperation with China will reach new heights.
中澳关系的不断发展离不开两国政府和社会各界的共同支持，也离不开在澳华人的积极贡献。中澳关系的健康稳定发展也为包括在澳华人在内的两国民众带来实实在在的福祉。
What we have achieved in bilateral relations would not have been possible without the joint support of the government and people of all walks of life in both countries and the good contributions of the Chinese community in Australia. At the same time, the sound and stable growth of China-Australia relations has brought real benefits to people on both sides, including the Chinese community.
200年的沧桑岁月是值得充分铭记的历史。200年后的今天，我们站在一个新的历史起点上。期待广大侨胞继续辛勤耕耘，自强不息，建设团结和谐、繁荣发展的华人社区，创造更加美好的生活；期待你们继续传承好中华传统文化，为繁荣澳大利亚多元文化作出积极贡献；也期待你们更好地发挥桥梁和纽带作用，积极支持和参与中澳合作与交流，推动中澳友谊不断发展！
The history of the past 200 years deserves to be remembered dearly. Today, 200 years on, we are standing at a new starting point in history. I believe that the Chinese here will continue to work as hard as ever to create a better life and build a harmonious and thriving Chinese community. I hope you will carry on the fine Chinese traditions and the Chinese culture and contribute more to the prosperity of multicultural Australia. I also hope that you will continue to serve as a bridge between Australia and your country of origin and do more to support and engage in bilateral exchanges and cooperation to further deepen the friendship between our two countries.
