PART Ⅳ TRANSLATION

Bai Yangdian, once called “the Yangtze River Delta in the North”, actually has a cottage shape of its own, which is quite different from the Delta. In the rainy South, people build sloping roofs to ease water flow. Here in the North, the flat roof of the cottage is often the place where the grains are aired in the sun. In history, whenever the cottages were flooded, villagers had to move things to their roofs. In that regard, their houses are built so closely that some of their roofs almost touch each other.

PART Ⅴ  WRITING

World consumption has experienced unprecedentedly rapid growth since the beginning of the 20th century. Satisfaction, however, does not necessarily result from increased consumption. A BBC documentary suggests that consumption can trigger some negative effects such as increasing pressure. George Simmel, from another perspective, stresses the important role consumption plays as a path to cultivation. My view is that consumption is a double-edged sword; while we should admit that consumption is beneficial to us, we should not ignore its drawbacks.

Consumption, according to George Simmel, cultivates the human capacity of self-reflection and underlies the formation of subjectivity, thus helping people to realize their uniqueness. By spending money on a wide range of products, we distinguish ourselves from other animal species and from other people as well, and therefore gain identity as unique individuals. Another profound effect of consumption on us is better life quality. Just think about how the stuff we purchased has facilitated our lives and we will see how significant consumption is to us. Moreover, when we make purchase we usually feel a sense of content. This is supported by numerous researches on consumer psychology. Despite the benefits of consumption, focusing too much on it would give rise to problems. One of them is anxiety. Humans are by nature fond of comparisons, which is especially true when it comes to material goods. For example, we refer to those with more accumulation of material goods as a benchmark, and in order to “keep up with the Joneses” we have to amass as many possessions as possible. But since there are always “the Joneses” that we fail to keep up with, we feel inferior and agitated. That explains why we are not necessarily happier even when we get wealthier and more abundant in materials. In ten-as of material possessions, people’s demand is always insatiable and consequently their stress is ever increasing because their income always falls behind their desires. Such anxiety, however, could be easily avoided if a rational attitude towards consumption is adopted.

In conclusion, while consumption in most cases raises our life quality, excessive and irrational consumption will cause us huge pressure and distress.
