As an old Chinese saying goes, only in hard times can courage and perseverance be manifested, and only after polishing can a piece of jade be finer. The 100-year-old Communist Party of China (CPC) began to govern the country over 70 years ago. Starting from a new political party of 50-plus members who sparked the flame of the Chinese revolution on the Red Boat (where the first CPC congress concluded), the CPC has developed itself into the world’s largest political party with more than 91 million members, navigating the country, like a great ship braving winds and waves, to the shore of national rejuvenation. Why is the CPC able to grow bigger and stronger? One of the reasons for its success is its high attention and firm commitment to reinforcing Party building in various aspects.
艰难方显勇毅，磨砺始得玉成。中国共产党成立100年，执政70余年，从不到60人的新生政党，到党员人数超过9100万人的世界第一大党，从播下革命火种的小小红船，到领航复兴伟业的巍巍巨轮。中国共产党由小变大、由大向强的一大成功经验在于始终高度重视和不断加强党的各方面建设。
The CPC priorities the effort to reinforce its political foundations. Attaching high importance to the political building of the Party, it makes upholding the authority and centralized, unified leadership of the CPC Central Committee its prime task. In particular, since the 18th National Congress of the CPC, the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core has emphasized clear political stance at a new height. It points out that the ideals and convictions of Party members are the marrow of their spirit, and demands that all Party officials remain politically discerning. It has strictly enforced political discipline and rules and carried out political activities within the Party in earnest. Through a series of important institutional arrangements, the Party ensures that all Party members consciously keep in alignment with the central committee and are resolved to uphold the initiatives proposed by the Party, implement the decisions made by the Party and refuse to do anything that is banned by the Party. With these institutional arrangements, the Party has made significant historical achievements in its political building. It is clear that strengthening the political building of the Party has been an unchanged theme on the Party’s journey over the past 100 years. It has a decisive impact on the direction and results of Party building and ensures that the CPC remains a Marxist political party in essence.
中国共产党始终把加强政治建设放在首位。中国共产党始终高度重视从政治上建设党，把保证维护党中央权威和集中统一领导作为党的政治建设的首要任务。特别是党的十八大以来，以习近平同志为核心的党中央把讲政治提到一个新的历史高度。从指出“理想信念就是共产党人精神上的‘钙’”，到要求党员干部做“政治上的明白人”；从严明政治纪律和政治规矩，到严肃党内政治生活，我们党通过一系列重要制度性安排确保全党自觉向党中央看齐，做到党中央提倡的坚决响应、党中央决定的坚决执行、党中央禁止的坚决不做，推动党的政治建设取得重大历史性成就。可以说，加强党的政治建设是贯穿我们党百年奋斗历程的一条主线，决定着党的建设的方向和效果，使我们党始终保持马克思主义政党的政治本色。
Strengthening ideological work is a distinctive characteristic and glorious tradition of the CPC. One of the important advantages enjoyed by the CPC is to uphold and develop a package of practical theories that keep abreast of the times. Since its inception, the Party has continued to highly value being well-grounded in both thinking and theory, and always used scientific theories to empower Party officials. Founded on Marxism and Leninism as the guiding ideology, the Party adapts the basic tenets of Marxism to Chinas specific realities, in a bid to adapt Marxism to the Chinese context. Over the past hundred years, the CPC has continued to emancipate its mind and seek truth from facts. It developed Mao Zedong Thought and Deng Xiaoping Theory, formed the Theory of Three Represents and the Scientific Outlook on Development, and gave shape to Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. These theories have provided effective guidance for Chinas revolution, construction, reform and development and ideologically guaranteed that the cause of the Party and the country always moves forward in the right direction.
加强思想建设是中国共产党的鲜明特色和光荣传统。中国共产党的一个重要优势就是坚持和发展了一套行之有效、与时俱进的理论体系，从其诞生之日起就始终重视思想建党、理论强党，坚持用科学理论武装广大党员干部的头脑，把马克思列宁主义作为自己的指导思想，同时把马克思主义基本原理同中国具体实际相结合，不断推进马克思主义中国化。100年来，中国共产党坚持解放思想和实事求是相统一，创立了毛泽东思想、邓小平理论，形成了“三个代表”重要思想、科学发展观，创立了习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想，在中国革命、建设、改革和发展的实践中发挥了科学指导作用，为党和国家事业始终沿着正确方向发展提供了坚强思想保障。
Consolidating its organizations is the source of political strength and power of the CPC. With the focus on various central tasks in different times in history, the CPC continues to improve its organizational structure and to exploit the advantages of organizations, thus ensuring that whatever stage the cause of the Party is in, the organizational structure will be improved accordingly and the Party organizations and members will play their part in advancing the cause. The CPC has established a complete organizational hierarchy consisting of organizations at the central, local and primary levels. Among them are over 3,200 local party committees, 145,000 leading Party members groups and work committees, and more than 4.86 million primary-level Party organizations. As the pivot of the hierarchy, the central committee has the authority to make the ultimate decisions. For local Party organizations, their fundamental task is to ensure effective implementation of decisions and arrangements made by the central committee. Primary-level Party organizations are in the last mile to put in place the decisions and arrangements of the central committee, playing a crucial role in this process. With a thorough organizational structure featuring good interconnections and powerful implementation, the Party is able to keep the Party flag flying high at the forefront of every major battle and at the grassroots level. This is a great strength that any other political party in the world does not have.
加强组织建设是中国共产党的政治优势和力量所在。中国共产党坚持围绕不同历史时期的中心任务，加强组织建设，发挥组织优势，确保党的事业发展到哪里、组织建设就跟进到哪里、党组织和党员作用就发挥到哪里。中国共产党建立了包括党的中央组织、地方组织、基层组织在内的完整组织体系，其中地方党委3200多个，党组、工委14.5万个，基层党组织486.4万个。党中央作为大脑和中枢，拥有定于一尊、一锤定音的权威；党的地方组织的根本任务是确保党中央决策部署贯彻落实，有令即行、有禁即止；基层党组织是贯彻落实党中央决策部署的“最后一公里”，充分发挥着战斗堡垒作用。通过形成上下贯通、执行有力的严密组织体系，鲜红的党旗始终在重大斗争主阵地和基层一线高高飘扬，这是世界上任何其他政党都不具有的强大优势。
Improving its conduct is the political awareness that the CPC maintains. From its long-term experience of endeavors to improve people’s wellbeing, the CPC has acquired and developed three fine work styles that is combining theory and practice, maintaining close ties with the people and performing criticism and self-criticism. It takes a resolute stand against all instances of malpractice that deviate from the purpose of the Party. These fine work styles are a crystallization of the Party’s nature and purpose and an important hallmark for its advanced nature and purity. They have always been and will continue to be a valuable asset for all Party members that inspires their will to brave hardships and forge ahead. Party officials charge forward without regard for their own safety at the forefront of major battles, be it the battle against poverty, disaster rescue and relief, or the fight against COVID-19, conveying the high morale of the Chinese Communists in the new era and becoming a model for the whole Party and the entire Chinese people. On the journey ahead of fully building a modern socialist country in the new era, the CPC will make unremitting efforts to improve its conduct. This will enable it to come together as a mighty force with high morale and continue to write a new splendid chapter.
加强作风建设是中国共产党一以贯之的政治自觉。在长期为人民利益奋斗的实践中，中国共产党形成和发展了理论联系实际、密切联系群众、批评和自我批评等三大优良作风，并始终坚持同各种背离党的宗旨的不正之风坚决作斗争。这些优良作风是中国共产党性质和宗旨的集中体现，是党的先进性和纯洁性的重要标志，不论过去、现在还是将来，都是激励全体党员不畏艰难、勇往直前的宝贵精神财富。在脱贫攻坚的主战场、在抢险救灾的第一线、在抗击疫情的战斗中，广大党员干部始终冲锋在前、舍生忘死，展现了新时代中国共产党人的昂扬精神风貌，成为全党、全国人民的学习榜样。在新时代全面建设社会主义现代化国家新征程中，驰而不息加强作风建设将使中国共产党凝聚磅礴力量、保持昂扬斗志，继续书写经天纬地的壮丽篇章。
As an old Chinese saying goes, although the road ahead is long and hard, you can make it as long as you follow your heart and persist. Reviewing the past progress of the Party and drawing lessons therefrom for future development, the CPC will certainly stay resolved to improve self-building and continue to strive for the Chinese dream of national rejuvenation. In this way, it will make greater new contributions to building a community with a shared future for mankind and to building a more beautiful world.
