obligate

强制……做某事

 

常用于被动语态，后面接用不定式。句式：be obligated to do sth。

【例】The seller of the option on futures is obligated to fulfill the contract on the buyer’s request.

期权卖方必须根据买方要求来履行期权合约。

①【例】Some sellers and buyers often attempt to avoid their contracted obligations.

有些卖方和买方往往企图逃避合同规定的义务。

 

②表示“履行义务”时，obligation常用复数形式，有时obligations转而指“债务”或“契约”本身。

【例】We cannot help doubting your sincerity in performing your obligations under the Contract.

我们不禁怀疑你方履行合同义务的诚意。

【例】The agent shall be under obligation to display optimum sample of the products during the duration of the Agency.

在代理机构存续期间，代理商有义务陈列产品的最佳样品。

【1】施恩惠于，为……做好事

 

①【例】We always like to oblige our regular customers.

我们总是愿意使老顾客受益。

 

②被动语态后接用 by。句式：be obliged by…

【例】We should be obliged by your early [prompt] reply.

请速赐复为感。

 

③用obliged作表语时可接用to sb for sth。句式：be obliged to sb for sth。

【例】We shall be obliged to you for a prompt reply.

如蒙速复，则不胜感激。

 

④句式：be obliged to sb for doing sth。动名词（doing）为sb的动作时，前面不能再用物主代词。

【例】We are much obliged to you for giving us so much advice.

你方提出许多意见，我们非常感激。

 

⑤被动语态句，附带有条件从句。

【例】We should be greatly obliged if you would send us your offer by return mail.

如蒙迅速寄来报盘，则感激不尽。

 

【2】迫使

 

①【例】Lack of demand obliges us to reduce production.

需求不足迫使我们要削减生产。

 

②多用于被动语态，接用不定式。句式：be obliged to do sth。

【例】Our manufacturers are obliged to decline orders because of shortage of materials.

由于原料短缺，我方工厂不得不拒收订单。
