Ode to Summer

It is not a bad experience to perspire profusely. You feel relaxed and relieved, especially when you have washed off the sweat by taking a bath. Even if there were no other reason, this alone would be enough for me to sing the praises of the summer season.

Under prolonged oppression, struggling hard, but facing it with composure and confidence. Does this not give our lives great significance? Spring makes us drowsy and lethargic, weakens our arms and legs. As if numbed with alcohol, we have no way to arouse ourselves. Autumn brings us a clear sky and crisp air, yet makes us too carefree to remember the toiling camels that also live in this world—the heavy loads wedged between their humps, and the leisurely pace at which they trudge determinedly onward. Winter besieges us with wind and snow, but our minds are not repressed. It is only in summer that we are oppressed in all possible ways: every pore, every nerve in our body is subject to oppression, while bedbugs, mosquitoes and flies come from all around to harass us. Life in summer, with its extreme tension, trains man to become a much more capable and powerful species. So, I will offer more words of praise to the season of summer.

Men in the 20th century are living a life like that which we experience every summer. Although a few social classes can, regardless of the seasonal changes, enjoy an easy life, as if to them all seasons were spring, this is only temporary. The wheels of history will soon crush this privileged class into pieces. Since life in summer is laden with tension and harshness, men have to devote themselves to bitter struggle. Look at the broad masses of the Chinese people, including intellectuals, farmers, workers, merchants and army soldiers. Is there anyone of them who is not struggling desperately against oppression and exploitation, panting and sweating? Curses may be heard from among the weak-kneed. But, I believe, only by earnestly taking on the burden, sweating as much as we can, and exerting to the limit the burgeoning strength of our lives can we transform our sweat into a timely rain, which will in turn drive off the stifling heat of summer and bring about a new world, bright and clear.

Summer is the most magnificent part of human life; I will never cease in singing its praises.
