【1】（时间上）下一个的，紧接来到的

 

①【例】We are pleased to inform you that the goods will be ready for shipment next month, and hope that they will arrive in time.

我们高兴地通知你方，下个月货物将备好待运，并希望货物能及时运到。

 

②next week、next month、next year等也可以指句中前面提到的时候以后的第一个星期、月份等，前面一般要用the。用了the，前面还可加用in。

【例】The goods left here in good order before the end of August, and we are confident that the damage must have occurred during transit (in) the next month.

货物8月底前离开此地时情况良好，我们相信它们一定是在下个月的运输途中发生损坏的。

 

③下例中next month前有介词within，故也应加the。

【例】We shall ship your order within the next month.

我们将在下月之内装运你方订货。

 

【2】紧接在后的，其次的

 

【例】An irrevocable L/C is the next best thing to cash in advance.

不可撤销的信用证是仅次于预付现金的最好的方式。

 

【3】next to靠近

 

【例】Next to the figures of quantities and amounts in the letter of credit, the word “about” should be inserted in order to allow for possible trade margin.

在信用证金额与数量前应加“大约”字样，以便抵付可能多装或少装部分货物的贷款。

 

【4】next to次于

 

【例】So far as the quality is concerned, I can say our product is next to none in Europe.

【5】next to几乎

 

【例】It is next to impossible to cut down our price to the level you mentioned in your letter.
