无效的

 

经常组成null and void使用。

 

①用作表语。

【例】The agreement became null and void owing to party B’s failure to fulfil their obligations.

由于乙方未履行其义务，协议已失效。

 

②用作宾语补语。

【例】Thus, we have to consider the contract null and void.

因此我们认为合同已失效。

 

注：take、regard等动词的宾补要求有as，例如：

【例】Under such circumstances, we have to take S/C No. 123 as null and void and hold you responsible for the consequences.

在此情况下，我们认为第123号销售确认书无效，后果应由你方负责。

 

number

【1】数目，数字

 

【例】It is essential that the numbers (should) conform to those written in the invoice.

这些数字必须与发票中数字相符。

 

【2】（常缩写成No.）号，号码

 

【例】Our product is one of the best in the world, if not the number one.

我方产品如果不是第一号的优质品，也是世界上最优产品之一。

 

【3】数量

 

【例】The number of machines available was inadequate.

机器的可供数量不足。

 

【4】a number of若干，许多

 

①【例】We have at present quite a number of orders on hand.

目前，我们手头有许多订单。

 

注：为了明确表示“许多”，最好用numbers of、a great [large, considerable] number of等。

 

②在a number of machines等之中，如果a number of同a lot of、a few of一样，表示不定数目时，句中最好配合使用复数动词。

【例】A number of machines need repairing.

许多机器需要修理。

 

③为了强调“许多”，number前面可加修饰词语。

【例】For a good number of large companies the overseas market is very important.

对于许多大公司，海外市场是非常重要的。

【1】很多的

 

用于修饰复数名词。

【例】After numerous postponements, they have at last sent in the designs for the carpets they ordered.

经过多次延期以后，他们终于送来了他们所订购的地毯的图样。

 

【2】（某集体的组成部分）为数众多的

 

用于修饰单数集体名词。

【例】We have a numerous category of light industrial products.

我们的轻工业产品种类众多。
